Tattoo Aftercare
Proper aftercare is essential for the healing process and to keep your new tattoo looking its best. Here are some general tattoo aftercare guidelines:
- After obtaining the tattoo, keep the bandage (Saniderm) on for at least 2–4 hours. Consider leaving the bandage on overnight if the tattoo is large or in an area where it may scrape against clothing. *Saniderm, a clear adhesive film, is designed to be worn for an extended period, typically 24 to 72 hours. During this time, the bandage will protect your tattoo and create an optimal healing environment. There may be a lot of fluid that builds up in the film and that's okay as long as nothing leaks in or out of the film..When it's time to remove the Saniderm bandage, gently lift one corner and slowly peel it back, parallel to the skin. Take your time to avoid any discomfort or damage to the tattooed area. If you encounter resistance during removal, you can moisten the edge of the bandage with warm water to help loosen the adhesive.
- After removing the bandage, gently wash the tattoo with lukewarm water and a mild, unscented antibacterial soap. Hot water and abrasive items, such as washcloths or loofahs, should be avoided.
- Pat the tattoo dry with a clean towel or paper towel. Do not rub the tattoo.
- Apply a thin layer of fragrance-free, water-based moisturizer. Petroleum-based products should be avoided because they might block pores and slow down the healing process.
- For the first two weeks, repeat steps 2–4 two to three times per day. After the first two weeks, you can reduce your washing and moisturizing frequency to once per day or as needed.
- Avoid direct sunlight, hot tubs, swimming pools, or soaking in water for at least two weeks. Avoid letting the water directly hit the tattoo when showering.
- Picking at scabs or peeling skin might result in scarring or damage to the tattoo.
- If the tattoo becomes excessively red, swollen, or painful, or if you develop a fever or other symptoms of infection, seek medical attention immediately.
Remember, everyone’s skin is different, and the healing process can vary depending on the size, location, and complexity of the tattoo. Always follow the instructions provided by your tattoo artist and consult with a medical professional if you have any concerns.
